The Eastern Michigan Eagles women’s basketball team had an up-and-down 2019-20 campaign, which came to an abrupt end due to the coronavirus pandemic, just as they were starting to play to their full potential. The Eagles finished with a 16-15 (9-9) record, including a 9-6 record at home, and a number of outstanding individual and team performances. Looking back, here are Eastern Michigan’s top five moments from this past season.

Damari Parris entered the transfer portal on Thursday, March 19 as he has one year of eligibility remaining. Parris has already transferred once during his college career as he played for Western Kentucky during the 2016-17 season before coming to Eastern Michigan. Parris only played for the Eagles during the 2018-19 campaign.

The Eastern Michigan men’s basketball 2019-20 season came to a close on Monday, March 9 as the Eagles lost in the first round of the MAC Tournament to Kent State 86-76. Now, with all sports being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s time to look forward to next season and project what the EMU team will look like.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-15, 9-9) women’s basketball team had their season end, as all others did, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Eagles were competing in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland the day before the tournament was cancelled on Thursday, March 12. EMU was set to play the following day.

Over the course of the past few days, the world around us has seemed to come to a halt. Almost every major sports league has put an indefinite pause to their seasons, such as the NBA, PGA, and MLB. Even March Madness has been cancelled. While I think these cancellations are just, I don’t think the NBA and NCAA should just throw this season away entirely.

The NBA announced that they were going to suspend the regular season indefinitely on Wednesday, March 11, after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). According to World-o-Meter, the United States has 1,412 cases of the virus, which has resulted in 40 deaths. There are 133,084 cases worldwide. The NBA’s decision sent a domino effect through the sports world, including the 2020 MAC Tournament in Cleveland.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (14-15, 9-9) women's basketball team lost their last regular season game versus the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday, March 7 at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant. Courtnie Lewis led EMU with 22 points, while Areanna Combs totaled 21 points and four rebounds in the loss.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-15, 6-12) men’s basketball team lost their final regular season game of the year to the Toledo Rockets (16-15, 8-10) on Friday, March 6 at Savage Arena in Toledo. The Eagles were led by Thomas Binelli, who finished the game with 12 points and three rebounds. Luke Knapke had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Rockets.

If I could sum up the entirety of this past season for EMU’s basketball team in one word, that word would be "inconsistent." Losing games they were favored to win and winning games they weren’t has been the theme of this season. When you play like that, your record probably isn’t going to boast anything special.

The Eastern Michigan (14-14, 9-8) women’s basketball team wrapped up their regular season and celebrated Senior Night against the Western Michigan Broncos for their last home game of the season on Wednesday, March 4 at the Convocation Center. After the Eagles crushed the Toledo Rockets 64-46 last week, EMU was ready to get back into action against the Broncos, who were only one spot behind EMU in the MAC standings.

The Western Michigan Broncos (13-17, 6-11) defended their home court in a win against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-14, 6-11) in Kalamazoo at University Arena on Tuesday night. EMU tied the Broncos at 35 with 17:07 left in the second half before being outscored 20-8 in the final nine minutes, ending with a 70-54 loss.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-13, 6-10) men’s basketball team came out with a huge victory on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Convocation Center. EMU came back from 14 points down to defeat Central Michigan, 67-63, behind Yeikson Montero’s 17 points. Boubacar Toure had 13 points and 14 rebounds on Senior Day for the Eagles.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (15-13, 5-10) men’s basketball team fell to the Ball State Cardinals after having an early lead Saturday, Feb. 22 in Muncie, Ind. EMU lost again in the following game versus the Northern Illinois Huskies on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Convocation Center.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (15-11, 5-8) men’s basketball team defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes on their home court in Ypsilanti on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The Eagles beat the Golden Flashes with an astonishing score of 70-49, clinching their third consecutive win after beating Central Michigan and Western Michigan recently.

The Eastern Michigan’s (12-11, 7-5) women’s basketball team defeated the Bowling Green Falcons (8-15, 1-10) on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green. The Eagles were led by Jenna Annecchiarico’s 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Areanna Combs added 20 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (12-12, 7-6) fell to the Akron University Zips on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti. The Eagles only had one double-digit scorer in the game as forward Areanna Combs dropped a game-high 23 points, four assists and two steals in the loss. Shaunay Edmonds had a team-high 15 points for the Zips.

The Eagles have now won three of their last five games, with a 4-8 overall conference record. Western Michigan came into this game with an overall record of 11-13 and a 4-7 record in the MAC.

The efficient second half scoring propelled EMU to a road win at McGuirk Arena against the Chippewas men's basketball who were 11-1 at home going into the game. The Eagles shot 55% and outscored CMU by 10 after halftime to win 73-70. Ty Groce scored 22 with 12 rebounds, while Boubacar Toure scored 20 with 13 rebounds.
