Eastern Michigan University partnered with the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Friday, Sept. 29, at 4p.m. to raise awareness for suicide prevention. The ‘Out of the Darkness Walk’ is part of an AFSP initiative to gather communities together to fight suicide.
A racist message was found on a men’s bathroom stall at Eastern Michigan University’s Student Center Wednesday, Sept., 27. The words “N------ die” were scratched into the surface, according to a statement made by student government and the NAACP.

As a freshman in college, you’ve already been told many different ideas of what it’s supposed to be like. I remember my parents, high school teachers and the average T-rated teen movies giving me all sorts of ideas. Many mild-mannered adults will tell you college is the time to focus entirely on education, to engage in numerous courses and soak up all that sweet, sweet knowledge with your endless supply of ramen noodles.
Freshman year of college is full of first-time experiences. The newfound freedom, the large size of campus and amount of students and opportunities to re-invent yourself are some of the basic changes you will experience. The purpose of this article, however, is to look at some things you might not have thought of. If you keep these eight things in mind, you will have a much better freshman year than most of your peers.
Immigration has been a hot topic in the news with the number of Syrian refugees escaping to other countries increasing. What the news doesn’t tell you though is that political refugees are a real issue. People cannot live in environments that harm them morally or physically.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, EMU campus based organization, Campus Life, held Campus Jam -- an annual free interactive mini carnival held at the Student Center. This event gives students and faculty a fun opportunity to connect with one another as well as various student based organizations.

The Color Run came to Ypsilanti, Michigan on June 25th. The event is a 5k run where participants are showered with colors as they reach different check points in the course. Early Saturday morning participants of the Color Run ran through Eastern Michigan University's campus eventually finishing at Frog Island Park where a color filled concert was held, and several vendors had tents set up. Wave after wave of participants began either walking or jogging the 5 kilometer course in their white shirts. Most participants were anxious to get to the next color station and add to their already color washed attire.
First comes college, then comes career? Well that is the hope for almost every college student. Whether it takes four years, more than four or (if you’re lucky) it takes less than four, either way college is a demanding process, and no student will say it didn’t take some overcoming.
Leaders from each of the Greek life councils at EMU traveled to Indianapolis to attend the AFLV Central, a weekend long conference, Feb. 4-7, hosted by the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values. All three Greek councils, the College Panhellenic Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan Hellic Council were able to go home with awards.
Eastern Michigan University is challenging students to participate in the Gift of Life Challenge. According to organdonor.gov, someone is added to the waiting list for an organ donor every 10 minutes. But the fact is that there aren't enough people donating to meet the number of people that need a transplant.
