Group will light candles for victims of suicide

By the time a person reaches college age, there is a good chance their lives have already been affected by a mental health issue. A 2004 study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Abbott Laboratories found that one in three students reported having long periods of depression and one in four reported having suicidal thoughts.

Matt on Music: Kacey Musgraves' 'Same Trailer Different Park'

·

The title of country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves’ new album, “Same Trailer Different Park,” comes from her acclaimed country hit “Merry Go ’Round,” which was released in September 2012. It was a surprising masterpiece, displaying a blunt kind of cynicism rarely seen in country music. It was such a contradiction to the genre’s rural obsession that it might as well have called “Miserable in a Small Town.”

EMU goddess Diana has difficult past

·

March 18 marks the 28th anniversary of the first theft of Eastern Michigan University’s life-size bronze statue of the Roman goddess Diana, located on a pedestal in the courtyard outside of Ford Hall.

Grindhouse Review: 'Creepshow 2: Old Chief Wooden Head'

·

From acclaimed author Steven King and legendry independent filmmaker George A. Romero comes the second installment to their classic horror anthology with “Creepshow 2.” Divided into three separated stories that are centered on a young teenage boy who picked up the latest issue of the popular comic, the film itself is considered a living breathing comic book that captures all the conventions, spirits and nature of a typical night at the movies for those who enjoy the horror genre.

Ashley Monroe’s ‘Like a Rose’ is clever, catchy and lets Monroe’s personality shine.

Matt on Music: Ashley Monroe's 'Like a Rose'

·

Loretta Lynn may not be the greatest country performer of all time (though she’s definitely up there), but she seems to have had the greatest influence, as the genre’s recent years have shown. Without Lynn, Miranda Lambert, Elizabeth Cook and Kacey Musgraves probably wouldn’t be performing. Even if they were, they’d probably be influenced more by a lesser performer, and their music might not be as powerful.

‘The Room’ will play this Saturday at 11:55 p.m. at Ann Arbor’s State Theater. Tickets are $7.

Cult film comes to State Theater

‘Black Christmas’ gets four out of four stars.

Grindhouse Review: 'Black Christmas'

·

On a cold night in the winter of 1974, a group of sorority sisters are having their annual Christmas party before most of them go home for the holidays. But what they don’t know is that lurking in the shadows is a stranger who has something else in mind: Cold-blooded murder. When one of the girls disappears without a trace and the group keeps receiving cryptic and obscene phone calls, the relaxing holiday season turns into a twisted nightmare that unsettles the nerves and makes one wonder; if they’re not safe in their own house, then where are they safe?

Local dining choices for student budgets

·

Much like the poem that sits at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, I am asking Eastern Michigan University to send me their tired, poor and hungry student masses. I am here to rescue you—if only to provide a guide to good eats around Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. I am Lorrie Mayzlin, a culinary arts and hospitality management student at neighboring Washtenaw Community College, set to transfer to EMU to finish a degree in restaurant management.

Katie's Craft Corner: Tote bags

·

Tote bags are one of those things everyone needs and has a distinct preference for: preppy, white nautical canvas bags with navy or red handles; giant, leather purse-style totes loaded with metal hardware; or crisp, quilted cotton bags in colorful prints.

The Ypsilanti Steering Committee will meet with EMU Wednesday and walk through town, inviting people to make suggestions.

Ypsi committee looks for Eastern opinions

·

Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Joan of Arc, Plato and Aristotle were each individuals who brought about change. Often, in comparison to these people, it may seem impossible that you have an opportunity to affect the world on that level, but the Ypsilanti Steering Committee says otherwise. The YSC is looking for members of the Eastern Michigan University community to come and suggest changes for the City of Ypsilanti.
