A fair portion of the profit from each handcrafted gift sold at Ten Thousand Villages, a store in Ann Arbor, gets returned to the pockets of the Third World artisans who made them. They automatically receive up to 50 percent in cash advances when an order is placed to produce more goods.

Walking into the art gallery on the lower level of the Riverside Arts center, located at 76 North Huron St. in Ypsilanti, a person would find himself or herself surrounded by the “On the Wild Side: Art of Nature.”

Founded 161 years ago, Eastern Michigan University has had multiple local businesses that have been students favorite spots to study, relax and chill with friends. Places that have lasted over the years (such as Sidetracks, Frog Island Park and Abe’s) have known the footsteps of the past.

When people picture Texas Hold ‘Em, images of cigar smoke filled casinos and World Poker Tournament tend to come to mind. But, every Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the Rec IM provides students and faculty alike with a much different image.

Storytellers stir hearts

Appropriately, ‘Home” was the theme of Campus Life’s first Storytellers Lounge, from 9-11 p.m Thursday in the Student Center’s SkyLounge. The atmosphere was accordingly intimate, candid, personal, serious and simultaneously light-hearted. Spotlights illuminated the stage and soft colors like Christmas lights hung over attendees, allowing students and Campus Life staffers to let their hair down.

Fashionality’s third annual fashion show “Le Parc a la Francais” brought up-and-coming designers and models together Sept. 30 to transform Eastern Michigan University’s University Park into a lavish circus-themed night in Paris.

For the homecoming season at Eastern Michigan University, most candidates campaigned in Spirit Stations, on Facebook, with posters and by word-of-mouth to get elected for the crown. Candidate Muneeb Khan, a heterosexual man, campaigned to not be disqualified from running for homecoming queen.

At 5 p.m. Saturday University Park became ground zero for the living dead. Fortunately a group of human students banded together to keep alive the hope that mankind will endure this impending zombie apocalypse. What is it about zombies that have allowed them to increasingly capture the hearts and imagination of the general public? They have infiltrated classic literature.

Campus Life’s Lounge series began Thursday with Laugh Lounge, a free comedy night featuring local comedians and free snacks in room 300 of the Eastern Michigan University Student Center. The room was filled to capacity with some students left standing or sitting on the floor.

New E-Zone focuses on atmosphere

Students waited in line this past Thursday as Eastern Michigan University’s newly renovated E-Zone gaming center opened for the first time this year. The gaming center is located on the first floor of the Student Center next to the Eagle Card Office and is open 11 a.m.12a.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. 11 p.m.

Ukulele trend gaining steam with students

There is a cultural shift evident on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. Though once a surprising campus sight, it has become quite common to see a student nonchalantly carrying textbooks under one arm and a ukulele under the other.
