Eastern Michigan University alumnus Tom Barthel sometimes gets to take his dog Dakota to work. “Dakota gets motion sickness after more than about twenty minutes, he starts throwing up all over the place,” Barthel said.

Area parks will host local summer events

While Eastern Michigan University certainly is a commuter school, many students still remain in the Ypsilanti area during the summer months. For those students, Ypsilanti may seem like a ghost town, but there are many events happening in two of the parks nearest campus.

Breakin' Curfew sells out to teenage crowd

By 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the line to the box office was spilling out the door and into the streets to see an event that featured artists that were still in the course of finishing their high school diplomas. People waited anxiously for a ticket to The Neutral Zone-sponsored Breakin’ Curfew — and for good reason. Tickets to the event go fast every year, and 2010 was no exception: Ann Arbor’s Power Center was completely sold out less than an hour after the box office opened.

Ypsilanti hears first lady's call for fitness

For some, sculpting the perfect beach body is priority number one when it comes to summer prerogatives. For others, curling 16-ounce Miller Lite tallboys by the pool passes as an effective exercise plan. However, many Ypsilanti residents are putting in an extra effort to take a recently launched weight-loss campaign to heart and plan to combat obesity by keeping themselves fit and energized over the course of those lazy summer days.

On May 1st, the Dr. Ron Davis Smoke Free Air Law came into effect. Two weeks into the implementation of the law and people have mixed reactions about it.

Cycle store takes personal approach

With the snow melted and hopefully not returning for six to seven months, many students will be hitting the pavement on bicycles. The cities of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor are renowned for their bike-friendly roads and trails. While one could always visit Walmart for a bike this spring, the conglomerate can never compete with local bike store Ypsilanti Cycle.

Kaki King to bring adventurous new album to The Ark

Kaki King may be the next big thing when it comes to the way the six-string guitar is played. She scored “Into the Wild,” collaborated with Dave Grohl on a Foo Fighters song, was nominated for a Golden Globe and with her fifth album, “Junior,” King feels like she’s starting all over again. “I almost felt like I was making my first album,” King said.

Alumna expands Biggby franchise in Ann Arbor

When Eastern Michigan University graduate and Biggby Coffee franchise owner Jeannine Mickeleit first traveled to the United States from Germany, she never planned to stay longer than her planned trip. But before long, she was living in Howell, Michigan, and enrolled at Lansing Community College.

Symphony Orchestra plays Brahms, Wagner in final show of semester

The Eastern Michigan University Symphony Orchestra performed two pieces Friday night: Richard Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman Overture” and Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No.3.” “The Flying Dutchman Overture” started with the sound of flowing waves, exemplified by downward chromatics from the orchestra and dramatic timpani rolls.
