Guest speaker analyzes women’s role in society

Eastern Michigan University’s 2010 Chinese Week officially started Sunday, and different discussions, speakers and entertainment will take place all week. This past Monday, the second day of the festivities kicked off with a speech about Women’s Roles in the 21st Century entitled “Raising the Second Generation.”

‘Monologues’ honor women, raise awareness

Well that wonderful time of the year is here again, where reds and pinks are everywhere and discussions about the wonders of being female are in the air. Of course I am talking about Eastern Michigan’s annual performance of the Vagina Monologues. This year will be the ninth production of this show. Written in 1998, author Eve Ensler’s monologue show has made an important impact on many lives and still continues to raise awareness for women.

While most of the world was camped out in front of a TV in anticipation to watch the big game this past Sunday afternoon, nearly one hundred others decided to flock to the Student Center to get some culture.

EMU professor's song, classic musical pieces please Pease audience

The Eastern Michigan University Symphony Orchestra concert on Friday featured music composed by an EMU professor and two other equally impressive pieces. The band performed three songs in total: “Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra,” “Dancing on Vesuvius” and “Symphony No. 5.” “The concert was fantastic,” junior engineering major Robert Drumm said. “I’ve been playing percussion since middle school, but I’ve never heard music this amazing before.”

Well, it’s almost Valentine’s Day, which means it’s time for me to give my annual soapbox speech about how wonderful Valentine’s Day is. It’s time for me to tell all the romantically challenged people of the world to appreciate the day for what it is. Stop being a hater. Suck it up and deal with the deluge of sap thick enough to clog even Mr. Butterworth’s arteries. It’s one day. Let us have it, enjoy it and live in peace. Suicide prevention group to talk at EMU

The organization To Write Love on Her Arms is paying a visit to Eastern Michigan University this Tuesday night at seven in the Student Center Ballroom. To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is an organization committed to giving hope and help to those who suffer from depression and addiction and battle suicide and self-injury.

Born and raised in Detroit, James J. Beasley, Jr. came to EMU in the early 1970s. He was actively involved in a number of student groups, and served as both the president of the Student Senate and Vice President of the Student Body. He was the first African American student ever to be elected as president of the Student Senate.

Theater has graced our presence since the earliest of civilizations. It has taken on many different forms and a variety of stages around the world. Last Thursday, The Galileo Players sketch comedy group made a hysterical showing in the Student Center Auditorium.

Forget the Super Bowl. Who cares about the Winter Olympics? The television event of the year (at least until May) is finally here: the season premiere of the sixth and final season of “LOST.” On Tuesday night, ABC will air the first new episode of “LOST” since May 2009. Now, eight months might not sound like a long time, but after a fifth season that saw the show’s creators pull out all of the stops, the wait hasn’t been easy.
