EMU Basketball crushes Kansas to win March Madness Tournament

The world stood still last night as the Eastern Michigan Eagles won the NCAA Tournament, which is the first national championship for the school. Fans and analysts everywhere had the 16-seeded Eagles being defeated in the first round, but EMU shocked the world and turned into Cinderella at the ball.

EMU women’s basketball finishes with winning record

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-15, 9-9) women’s basketball team had their season end, as all others did, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Eagles were competing in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland the day before the tournament was cancelled on Thursday, March 12. EMU was set to play the following day.

Eagles men's track team finished second in the MAC prior to cancellations

The Eastern Michigan men’s track and field team had two meets between Feb. 22-29. The first was the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 22, the second was the two-day MAC Indoor Championship beginning on Feb. 28. The men’s team had high finishes in both events, but all further events in the season have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eagles baseball season cancelled after 14 games

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (1-13) men’s baseball team had their season come to an end due to the coronavirus outbreak. The NCAA has cancelled the remainder of winter and spring sports but they announced that all seniors competing in spring sports will have the option to return next season for another year of eligibility.

EMU gymnastics finished with three wins before cancellation

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (3-7) women’s gymnastics team concluded its 2020 season on March 7, against Michigan State University in East Lansing. The team was scheduled to play 13 meets this season but could only compete in 11 due to the cancellation related to COVID-19.

The tennis team finishes shortened season with 10-7 record

Hundreds of college athletic programs have stopped short due to COVID-19. EMU has canceled all events and team practices for the spring season. That includes women’s tennis, that finished with a 10-7 record. Conference matches were set to start on March 22, however EMU followed suit with NCAA guidelines in not having those matches be played.

EMU tennis defeats Cleveland State

The Eastern Michigan women’s tennis team claimed another win in the clash against the Cleveland State Vikings this afternoon. With this only being their second matchup against each other in school history, EMU was able to take yet another victory, remaining undefeated against them with a 2-0 record. The Eagles currently reside at a solid 10-7 record as a result, while Cleveland State falls to 8-5.

Eagles fall to Bearcats 8-1

Eastern Michigan kicked off the first of their doubleheader battle Saturday afternoon against the Cincinnati Bearcats, after being postponed from Friday due to brewing storms in the area. The Cats were roaring and scoring in this barn burner, resulting in an 8-1 loss for the guys in green.

Coronavirus’ impact on MAC Tournament and EMU athletics

The NBA announced that they were going to suspend the regular season indefinitely on Wednesday, March 11, after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). According to World-o-Meter, the United States has 1,412 cases of the virus, which has resulted in 40 deaths. There are 133,084 cases worldwide. The NBA’s decision sent a domino effect through the sports world, including the 2020 MAC Tournament in Cleveland.

The Eastern Michigan (14-14, 9-8) women’s basketball team wrapped up their regular season and celebrated Senior Night against the Western Michigan Broncos for their last home game of the season on Wednesday, March 4 at the Convocation Center. After the Eagles crushed the Toledo Rockets 64-46 last week, EMU was ready to get back into action against the Broncos, who were only one spot behind EMU in the MAC standings.

The Eagles were led by Thomas Binelli, who finished the game with 12 points and three rebounds. Luke Knapke had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Rockets.

Eagles lose 70-54 on the road versus Western Michigan

The Western Michigan Broncos (13-17, 6-11) defended their home court in a win against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-14, 6-11) in Kalamazoo at University Arena on Tuesday night. EMU tied the Broncos at 35 with 17:07 left in the second half before being outscored 20-8 in the final nine minutes, ending with a 70-54 loss.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-13, 6-10) men’s basketball team came out with a huge victory on Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Convocation Center. EMU came back from 14 points down to defeat Central Michigan, 67-63, behind Yeikson Montero’s 17 points. Boubacar Toure had 13 points and 14 rebounds on Senior Day for the Eagles.
