Debris, the winter 2014 BFA senior exhibition, will be on display from March 24 to April 2. Showcasing art from upcoming BFA students, the exhibition will be located in Eastern Michigan University’s Ford Gallery and will include graphic design, painting, photography, video and more.

Eastern Michigan University’s Student Government hosted a “Meet the Candidates” panel Tuesday evening in the Student Center Auditorium with 16 of the 22 senatorial candidates for the 2014-2015 school year. Most of the people in the small, but enthusiastic audience were also affiliated with Student Government at EMU. People from general student population did not attend the event, which was reflective of a larger issue EMU has with student participation.

Nathan Bomey, a reporter at The Detroit Free Press and 2006 Eastern Michigan University journalism and political science alumnus, will give a presentation about how he covered the Detroit Bankruptcy Monday, March 24 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Pray-Harrold room 213. The event is presented by EMU’s journalism program, the Department of English, EMU Student Media and the Department of Political Science.

As the showdown in Ukraine continues to escalate, Kiev said its conflict with Russia was moving into a “military” phase after a Ukrainian serviceman was shot dead in Crimea by Russian forces, The Irish Times reported Tuesday. The Eastern Michigan University political science department also decided to act by presenting an open forum presentation to the EMU community to address the crisis and what it might mean to international affairs, national security and the global economy.

Eastern Michigan University associate professors of social work Barbara Walters and Jennifer Fritz held a presentation called “Prison of Silence: The Invisibility of Incarcerated Women and Their Children” at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Held in room 300 of Halle Library, the presentation highlighted ways to keep incarcerated mothers in their children’s lives.

Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center would have looked more at home Saturday night if it were surrounded by rows of corn and wheat fields instead of standing vigil on the border of EMU’s campus. Four-wheel drive trucks, girls clad in short skirts and cowboy boots and more guys in flannel since Nirvana was touring descended upon it in droves for the Justin Moore concert.

Eastern Michigan University’s Star Lecture series concluded Tuesday night with “Manifestations of Poverty: Who Cares? The Cultural Politics of Indifference” presented by the director of EMU’s school of social work, Lynn Nybell. Her lecture highlighted the increasing trend towards neo-liberalism in the United States and its effects on American culture and its economy.

A panel consisting of Michigan’s first female Chief Deputy Attorney General Carol Isaacs, Assistant Attorney General Kelly Carter and Attorney General Crime Victims’ Advocate John Lazet discussed the issue of human trafficking in the state of Michigan. Eastern Michigan University students, faculty and members of the Ypsilanti community joined the conversation in the Student Center Tuesday morning as part of the Women’s History Month series of events at EMU.
