EMU Office of the Ombuds present to Student Government

The Office of the Ombuds is a resource for the Eastern Michigan University community to take advantage of when faced with any concern. The office helps to resolve issues, coach through conflicts and act as a neutral resource while investigating grievances through EMU. Ombuds came to the Sept. 24 Student Government meeting to make themselves known so that members in Student Government can point individuals in their direction to receive help as well as be a resource to the office when looking into different policies here on campus.

The Office of Wellness and Community Responsibility hosts the Wellness Woof to help students deal with stress and anxiety

Students were excited to attend the launch of this year’s series of Wellness Woofs, showing up at the Lake House to pet therapy dogs. The dogs were provided by Therapaws, a nonprofit organization that works with therapy animals. The Office of Wellness hosts this program throughout the semester, with the intention of helping students manage through stress and anxiety while bringing the campus community together.

Students warned of 'phishing' email scams

The average college student thinks they can spot an email scam when they see it. While many may avoid getting ‘phished,’ I.T. wants to remind students how to be safe online, including never giving out any personal information through email.

Suchowesky voted in as Student Services Committee vice-chair

Senator Kirck Suchowesky was voted in as the Student Services Committee vice-chair on Tuesday, Sept. 17. A 2-0 vote gave Suchowesky the promotion with no competition. Suchowesky said he feels prepared as a returning member to take on the new responsibilities of being a vice-chairman.

Student Services Committee plan healthy living week

The Student Services Committee had its first meeting Tuesday, Sept. 17. The committee discussed events for the year including a healthy living week that is tentatively being named “A Better YOU @ EMU Week.” The week will focus on diet, exercise, financial literacy, sexual health and mental health.

Eastern Michigan University presented with grant to establish new foster parent training program

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) sent a request for proposal (RFP) to design an updated foster parent training curriculum to replace the current educational program required of anyone who is interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent. MDHHS has granted Eastern Michigan University with $689,200 to revise this program with more current research-based content. Leading the project will be EMU's very own Dr. Sarah Shea, Dr. Jennifer Farley and Dr. Jennifer Kellman Fritz.

LGBTQ+ community underrepresented within the Student Government

The Student Government held it’s first official meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, where Queer and Trans People of Color Collective Coordinator Ariana Khan spoke up about the LGBTQ community not having a voice in the Student Government. Senators heard Khan’s concerns and although they cannot give her an official delegate position, they offered their personal support as well as welcomed her to the gallery of any Student Government meeting that is held.

EMU hosts 8th 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

EMU’s 9/11 memorial features a 14-foot, 7,000 pound beam from the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The tasteful ceremony incorporated members of the EMU and Ypsilanti community in remembering the events of 9/11.
