EMU women's basketball breaks five game losing streak with 70-61 defeat over Miami University

Ce’Nara Skanes earns 21st career double-double as Eastern Michigan University student-athlete

The Eastern Michigan University womens' basketball team (6-16, 3-12 Mid American Conference) secured a 70-61 win over Miami University (8-16, 4-11 MAC) on Feb. 16, inside of the George Gervin GameAbove Center.

Miami leads in head-to-head victories, 43-23, in the all-time series between Eastern Michigan University and Miami University after Wednesday’s win. 

Areanna Combs led the Eagles’ scoring efforts with 19 points, adding seven rebounds to team rebounding total. The matchup between Miami marks Combs' ninth time this season accumulating seven rebounds in a single game and 25th time in her career at Eastern Michigan University. 

Sophomore Ce’Nara Skanes earned her 21st career double-double, recording 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles against Miami. According to EMU Athletics, her performance against Miami records her ninth double-double of the season and fifth double-double in the last eight games. Skanes also had three blocks against Miami, tying her career-high. 

Skanes is leading 30-of-34 from the free throw line as well. As a team, EMU finished 16-of-19 from the free throw line against the Redhawks. The Eagles' shooting efforts marks the second-best performance from the team from the free throw line since the Eagles faced Bowling Green Jan. 24, and went 18-of-21 against the Falcons.

EMU tallied five blocks, which has only happened seven times this season. In the 2020-21 campaign, EMU only recorded five-or-more blocks in a game three times.

Danielle Rainey scored 14 points for the Eagles, while Natalia Pineda helped the green and white with three assists. 

Teammates Juanita Agosto and ZaNiya Nelson recorded three steals each against the Redhawks. According to EMU Athletics, Nelson also tied a career-best in field goals made (4), and her three steals is a new best mark for the freshman. 

The Eastern Michigan Eagles are set to play the Central Michigan Chippewas Feb. 19. at 1 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The Eagles will remain on the road Feb. 23 to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies at 6 p.m. CT. Both games will be live streamed on ESPN 3.
