During the winter season, many families around Ypsilanti struggle to provide winter necessities to their children, including coats, hats and gloves. Not only is it hard to afford these items, but some families cannot afford presents under a Christmas tree.

During the last two weekends in October, Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti offers lantern-lit tours to help locals get in the Halloween spirit. Located at 943 N. River Street, James Mann, the local historian, starts the tour as soon as the iron gates are creaked open. The cost for the tour is 5 dollars per person.

In 2012, 97,656 residences of Michigan reported some form of domestic violence, according to the Michigan Incident Crime Report via Michigan.gov. The majority of the victims were females in their mid-twenties who were dating the offender. According to Simone Dixon, a student staff member at the Women’s Resource Center, domestic violence is “sexual, emotional or physical abuse from some. It doesn’t have to be gender, race, age or religion bound.”

Run Scream Run, hosted by Running Fit, is a day of scary costumes, healthy choices, a county fair and a haunted thrill park, all rolled into one. On Oct. 12, participants will line up at Wiard’s Orchard, located at 5565 Merritt Road in Ypsilanti for either a Freaky 5k or Terrorizing 10k.
