Smoke-free Air Law has no strong effect on bar sales

A Sept. 17 report released by the Michigan Department of Community Health found the Dr. Ron Davis Smoke-free Air Law, effective since May 1, 2010, did not have a significantly negative impact on bar, restaurant or cigarette sales in Michigan.

CAMPUS Sept. 16 A subject with warrants was arrested after running from police at 3:02 a.m. at Pittman Residence Hall. A backpack containing an iPad was stolen when left unattended at 8:31 p.m.

Two suspects named in shooting

Detectives have identified two suspects — one of which has been arrested — believed to be involved in an attempted murder shooting that occurred in the 1000 block of McCarthy Court.

Sex assault suspect's hearing set for June 29

A man accused of entering the residence of a female Eastern Michigan University student and sexually assaulting her was arraigned Thursday on one count of first-degree home invasion and felonious assault with a knife and one count of first-degree criminal sexual assault.

Ypsi citizens support cancer research with Relay for Life

Cancer survivors and supporters will participate in the 2010 Relay for Life event at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Park. Relay for Life began in Tacoma, Wash. Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, decided he wanted to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. Klatt began to raise money for his local American Cancer Society office by running marathons

June 6 — Damage to business property in Jones Hall was reported. A subject was arrested for possession of marijuana while walking through campus near West Circle Drive and Oakwood Street at 11:08 p.m.

Martin joining Ann Arbor non-profit

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin was elected to Ann Arbor SPARK’s board of directors at the group’s annual meeting in May. Leigh Greden, executive director of government and community relations at EMU was also named to SPARK’s executive committee.

Committee finds $50,000 error

The Downtown Development Authority’s Executive Committee last Tuesday discovered a budget shortfall that put revenues nearly $50,000 under expenses and noticed money from the DDA’s reserves were used to balance the budget last year.

Chapelle, East Middle schools to close after a 5-2 vote

·

In a 5-2 vote, the Ypsilanti Public Schools’ Board of Education approved a plan to close both Chapelle Elementary and East Middle School Monday night. As recommended by the district administration, the move, expected to save approximately $1.3 million, will go into effect at the end of this academic year.
