Amid the humidity in the Strong Hall Atrium, it was all smiles and high fives. On Wednesday, April 19, the partnership between Eastern Michigan University and local school districts grew even stronger when the Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium (WEOC) and its Early College Alliance program donated $200,000 toward the renovation of Strong Hall, a salient STEM-focused facility at the university.

Jayquon Tillman, an 18-year old Eastern Michigan University student was fatally shot on Saturday, May 6 at a party four miles away from Kent State University in Portage County, Ohio. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the Portage County sheriff’s said deputies were dispatched to a large party at a multi-family residence on state Route 43 in Franklin Township around 11:30 p.m.
Sunday On April 2 at 12:22 a.m., DPS received a call regarding a highly intoxicated female, who sustained minor injuries to the forehead, during a party at Village Building E.
“The biggest instance was when we were leaving and six people in our group were informed by Spirit Airlines that their flights were cancelled and rescheduled for five days later,” Eastern Michigan University President of the Physician Assistant student organization, Emily Batdorf said. It was February 26.

Liat Ben-Moshe, Ph.D., assistant professor of disability studies at the University of Toledo presented her lecture “Epistemologies of Abolition” as part of the Philosophy Speaker Series on Thursday, March 23 at Halle Library. Moshe’s lecture focused on the institutionalization of disabled people, which is the movement of people outside of large residential institutions for people with intellectual disabilities and psychiatric hospitals and looking at these as forms of incarceration.

Eastern Michigan University to host 37th Undergraduate Symposium Eastern Michigan University will hold the 37th Undergraduate Symposium at the Student Center, March 31. Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, the event will showcase creative student research and projects while celebrating the prodigious academic fortunes of the EMU student body. Participation for the symposium is welcome to all undergraduate students from all colleges at the university, provided that students have been nominated by a faculty mentor and recommended by their respective department or school. The program breaks down into segments that will highlight oral presentations and poster presentations, followed by a design expo and celebratory luncheon exclusively for student presenters and faculty. The keynote speaker will be “USA Today” business reporter and Eastern Michigan University alumnus and former Eastern Echo staffer Nathan Bomey.
Eastern Michigan University students can vote for the 2017-18 Student Government student body president and vice president, Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30. “When the student body president or vice president tells the administration or Board of Regents that something needs to happen, and a feasible plan is presented, then something will indeed happen,” said Josh Starr, current student body vice president. “Eastern's Administration is incredibly involved with their student leaders, and being one of those leaders is an honor,” he said.

Heather Lyke, the Director of Athletics, has been announced to and will leave Eastern Michigan and accept the same position at the University of Pittsburgh. The reports came in overnight and have been cleared and shown that Lyke will leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference power.

The Honors College held “Our Untold Stories,” a panel discussion, Thursday, March 9, in Eastern Michigan University’s Sill Hall, co-hosted by the Black Student Honors Organization. Honors College faculty fellow, Dr. Toni Stokes Jones, introduced panelists: Dr. Deborah Harmon; Dar Mayweather, coordinator for the Center for Multicultural Affairs; Victoria Walters, Best hall graduate director and David Hendricks; Sellers hall graduate director – some of Eastern Michigan University’s highly acclaimed African-American role models.
