Golf places 4th

The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team traveled to Williamsburg, Va. for the C&F Bank Intercollegiate tournament from March 24-26. Due to snow, play was cancelled for both the 24th and 25th. They managed to get a full round in on the 26th, which counted for the tournament’s final scoring.

Women’s golf finishes 8th in tournament

The Eastern Michigan University women’s golf team traveled south to Austin, Texas, for the Challenge at Onion Creek Tournament April 1-2. The team finished in eighth place overall in the tournament with a three round team score of 900.

Upcoming concert for dance seniors

Graduating dance majors will get to showcase their capstone projects at this year’s Senior Projects Dance Concert, hosted by the department of music and dance at Eastern Michigan University. This free event will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. at Pease Auditorium.

If any of that describes you or you’d just like to hear a group of bands pay tribute to one of the greatest American rock groups of all time, come to Woodruff’s, located at 36 E. Cross St. in Ypsilanti, on Saturday at 9 p.m. for ‘Mats Fest.

Many don’t know the full truth behind the organization circulating the equal sign logo on Facebook.

Human Rights Campaign for some, not all

A large amount of Facebook users showed their support for gay marriage last week by changing their profile picture to the Human Rights Campaign’s equal-sign logo, and the trend is slowly going out of style. One is stirred to wonder if people really knew the full truth about who was behind this movement that took our newsfeeds by storm.

“Mormons can’t rock. There, I said it,” a friend of mine quipped about Low after I posted my overview of the band on Facebook. In response to that statement, I must bring up the Butler brothers of Arcade Fire and New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane, as well as the fact that Low isn’t a particularly rocking band. Their style is mainly based around minimalism, harmony and beauty; three things that many people, including my friend, love about The xx, and what I love about Yo La Tengo’s “Fade.”

‘The Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White’ is set in 1918 and follows an interracial couple in South Carolina.

Performance brings light to discrimination issues

Americans have come a long way in terms of diversity and discrimination. But in light of the recent movement for a high school in Georgia to desegregate their prom, we are reminded that despite it being the 21st century, discrimination still exists in America. Eastern Michigan University professor and director Wallace Bridges brings forth such issues in performances of “The Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White,” originally written by Alice Childress, this month on campus.

“For my capstone communication class [that] I need to graduate, I need to work with a nonprofit organization,” senior center Matt Balkema said. “I chose Mentor2Youth. They work with local kids with troubled backgrounds. I figured I love being around kids, I love being a role model type so I figured why not.”
