Women's tennis succeeds at William and Mary

·

The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis program started its season off on the right foot with a doubles win over a Harvard team that was ranked 40 nationally. At the 18th annual William and Mary Invitational, the Eagles top doubles team of Miriam Westerink, junior from Rheden, the Netherlands, and Nino Mebuke, freshman from Tbilisi, Ga., upset the Harvard team that was ranked number one at the invitational. Coach Ryan Ray, in his fourth year with the program, said he was happy with the result of his team’s first action this season. “Having only two practices before going put us at a disadvantage to many schools that started in August with classes and practice,” said Ray.

Column: Is EMU's check worth playing OSU?

·

There is nothing wrong with losing to Ohio State (3-0). The No. 2 Buckeyes (as much as it pains me to say it) Have been the class of the Big Ten, and a perennial contender for the BCS title the last few seasons. They have top-level talent, and a fan base that would frighten the Bloods and Crypts, or Al Capone’s ruthless mobsters.

The Eagles have some running room here, but little else went right in 2009’s 56-8 defeat by the Chippewas. This year, CMU is in transition with an average running game, but Eastern has not been able to stop anyone on the ground.

Eastern Michigan looks for turnaround at home

·

Eastern Michigan University takes on Central Michigan University, Sept. 18 at home, and it sounds crazy, but this could be the game. The Eagles’ last victory came against Central Michigan in the last game of the 2008 season.

Tigers fans prep for non-playoff season

·

It might seem like a silly question to ask this late in the season with the Tigers still sitting far back in the American League Central and all, but like it or not there will be baseball in Detroit this September.

The Eagles look to redeem themselves after their last season of 0-12 and rise above the ranking of 120 of 120.

Eastern steps up its football game

·

Excitement, commitment, intensity and anticipation. Not only are all of these things that are needed in order to go from the bottom of the barrel, but they are also words you can use to describe Eastern Michigan University’s 2010 football team.

EMU’s Jennifer Swartz (11) watches as her teammate Rachel Iaquaniello hits the ball to the opposing Michigan side for a point.

Volleyball kicks off season with big wins

·

The Eastern Michigan Volleyball team is looking to rebound from its sub-par season last year. While the team struggled last season, capturing only five wins, the return of 11 letter winners and their experience playing at the collegiate level is a springboard for the start of the 2010 season. The Eagles begin the season under the leadership of head coach Kim Berrington.
