Thursday afternoon Sally Young, the production manager of the Emmy-award winning sitcom Modern Family and an Eastern Michigan Univesrity alumnus graduating forty years back, sat in Quirk-Spongberg Theater to discuss her career and give advice to the EMU community on what it takes to make it in Hollywood.
The EMU Food Campus is going to be hosting a food drive in the Student Center all week. They are going to be accepting all non-perishable food items, anytime, in room 346.
“We don’t need more awareness. Everyone pretty much knows about autism, so we thought it’d be better to have a march for autism acceptance,” Theodore Coutilish, Eastern Michigan University’s Associate VP for Marketing said.

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance is holding an Equity Conference at the Student Center, Monday, April 11. The NLA will be discussing equity, diversity and inclusion on campus. This will be in room 300 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Admittance will cost $20 and is LBC approved.
“One of the things that young people generally can be convinced of is ‘I’d like to make a difference in the world,’ and if I come out of a community and if I go back to that community – or even one very similar to it – I’m more likely to persist,” Michael Sayler said.
The 36th Annual Symposium packed the Student Center, Friday, April 1. Eastern was the first university to have a campus-wide celebration and sharing of senior thesis’ in this way. There were 450 student participants this year. The day began with 189 oral presentations starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Marketplace will be celebrating Open Day with a baseball game themed menu on Monday, April 4. Hot dogs, pretzels and chili cheese fries will be available for $7.90.

The EMU theater group Close Up is having its play, Growing Pains, at the Alexander Music Hall, Thursday, March 31. This play is about the issues contemporary college students face at EMU and campuses across the country. It is free to attend and will start at 8:00 p.m.

Spring is here, which means it’s time for the Best Buddies Friendship Walk on Saturday, April 9. Best Buddies is an inter-collegiate program to create greater inclusion for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The Eastern Michigan University and University of Michigan chapters will be meeting at Gallup Park for a day-long outing.
Easter was Sunday, March 27, but the Student Center’s Food Court will be having a three-hour egg hunt, Monday, March 28, at 12:00 noon. Eggs will be hidden around the Student Center and the student with the most will get an unspecified prize.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, jails in the United States hold more people than any other country in the world. This fact is part of what led Lora Lempert to write her book “Women Doing Life.” Lempert is a qualitative researcher, feminist researcher and grounded theorist who focused on the lives of women serving life sentences. She presented her findings as part of the Women and Gender Studies Lecture Series.
Eastern Michigan University has built a new Center for Jewish Studies. Martin Shichtman has been the director of Jewish studies for six years at Eastern. There has been a Jewish studies minor since March 2012 and Shichtman has been trying to get the center up and running since then.
Eastern Michigan University’s Black Women’s Leadership Symposium will be starting at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 24, in the Guild Room of McKenny. This will be a five-person panel “examining the importance of joining in solidarity with other women of color and potential allies in efforts to elicit social change,” according to the EMU calendar. According to the Sistership Initiative’s Facebook page, one member of the panel will be Heather Neff, PhD, an EMU literature professor and director of the McNair Scholarship. It will also include Chiara Hensley, PhD, EMU’s assistant VP of Student Affairs, Trelawny Boyton, Director of Multiethnic Student Affairs at the U of M, social activist and EMU alumnus Doretha Thomas and Ann Lampkin-Williams, PhD, Special Councilor to the Chancellor for Inclusion and Strategic Projects at U of M – Dearborn. Attendance is free and LBC approved.
