Women's basketball earns exhibition win

The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened its season with an 84-60 win over Saginaw Valley State in exhibition play Friday at the Convocation Center. The Eagles were outrebounded 51-44 and had eight more personal fouls than the Cardinals.

Commentary: Suspensions by English deliver a statement to players

Last Thursday Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English made a bold move by suspending five players for “violating team rules.” The move looked even more bold when names were released and included key players like starting running back Dwayne Priest, leading tackler and linebacker Tim Fort and Louisville transfer corner Lattarius Thomas. It is unknown what team rules the players broke to earn their indefinite suspension, but whatever they did, maybe English made the right call. The decision to suspend four seniors could not have been an easy one for English.

Roundup: Women's soccer falls to the Toledo Rockets

The Eastern Michigan University’s women’s soccer team lost its first Mid-American Conference game of the season Sunday, when it fell to the host Toledo Rockets 1-0. The Eagles (9-6-4, 6-1-3) had won nine in a row and are third in the West Division.

Competitive dance team to make 'thrilling' appearance

Making your way to the football game Saturday? Don’t be alarmed when you see dozens of people dancing like the un-dead while you’re enjoying your afternoon tailgate. Eastern Michigan’s competitive dance team will “randomly” appear roughly between 1-3 p.m.

Volleyball gets 21st win

The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team had a weekend sweep, giving it 21 victories on the season. The Eagles went two for two on the road traveling to Buffalo on Friday and Akron on Saturday to go 21-6 and 8-2 in the Mid-American Conference.

Roundup: Soccer draw final home game, 1-1

Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer played its final home game of the season at Scicluna Field Sunday, finishing with a 1-1 draw against Western Michigan. The Eagles and goalie Monique Budani were out shot by a three-to-one margin, but Budani was able to keep the Broncos from getting the go-ahead goal. Paige Sheridan put her eighth goal of the season in to help the Eagles jump out to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Sunday was the final home game for seniors Paige Sheridan, Monique Budani, Maggie Christensen and Stephanie Janssens.

EMU football coach Ron English. English continues to build a team which EMU will be proud of in the future. This has been his first win since becoming coach in 2009.

English is relieved after achieving win

Coach Ron English and his staff can breathe a sigh of relief, now he has gotten his first win as head coach of the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Sometimes it’s difficult to get that first win, especially when you’re given the large task of having to rebuild a football program that had problems in the past putting up wins in a single season.

EMU Volleyball takes two more

Swim season starts up

Swimming season is upon us once again. The Eastern Michigan University women’s and men’s swimming teams held their annual Green and White meet on Saturday afternoon in the Jones 50M Pool of the REC/IM. “Basically it’s a dress rehearsal for our swimmers,” head coach Peter Linn said.

Men’s Golf Men’s golf placed fourth at the Firestone Invitational. Eastern was led by Kalamazoo native Nick Carbary, who shot one under to finish seventh. t-7. Nick Carbary, 71-74-70=215  t-10. Brian Churchill-Smith 72-73-71=216  t-14. Jared Dalga 68-72-77=217  t-22. Zach MacDougall 75-73-72=220  68.

Strength of pitchers continues into October

After the divisional round of the Major League Baseball playoffs, it looks like the “Year of the Pitcher” will continue into October. The most important player of round one was Texas Ranger Cliff Lee, who beat the Tampa Bay Rays twice in what was the only five-game first round series.
