The Eastern Michigan University men’s swimming and diving team handed the University of Buffalo its first loss of the season by winning, 164-136, Saturday afternoon at Jones Natatorium.

No. 1 OSU undefeated in Big Ten

College basketball’s top three seeds were on showcase Saturday, with one team pulling off the victory on a day of upsets. No. 1 Ohio State remains unbeaten, as it defeated host and No. 22 Illinois, 73-68, improving its record to 20-0 and 7-0 in the Big Ten play.

Another poor shooting game for the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team resulted in a 60-51 loss to Mid-American Conference West Division leader Ball State University on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

Leading scorer Brandon Bowdry, shown in an earlier game, was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team.” The Eagles shot 36 percent from the field, losing 65-48 at Western Michigan on Sunday.

Sports Roundup The Eagles lost 65-48 to Western Michigan on Sunday when they were forced to play without the team’s leading scorer, Brandon Bowdry. Bowdry was suspended due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” The Eagles played poorly on offense, shooting 36 percent from the field, turning the ball over 17 times. Western Michigan rebounded the Eagles, 46-30.

Packers still look good vs. Bears

Last weekend, we almost had four NFL playoff games that made sense. On Saturday, Pittsburgh took care of business at home and beat the Ravens; Aaron Rodgers was able to throw at will against Atlanta’s secondary as the Packers rolled to victory. Sunday afternoon, the Bears beat the Seahawks despite a very interestingly coached fourth quarter.

The Major League Baseball Hall of Fame recently concluded a vote by the Baseball Writers Association of America. The voting process has been the subject of great scrutiny. despite electing two deserving candidates in second baseman Roberto Alomar and starting pitcher Bert Blyleven, the process is still a mess.

When I decided to do an NFL picks column for The Echo, I didn’t want to dedicate much of the content of the column to my picks from last week. Unfortunately, my 0-4 record last week was too ugly to ignore. There is an added degree of difficulty picking games this early in the week, especially without the benefit of the Vegas spread. But I’m better than 0-4. Let’s take a look at what happened last week, and see if I can’t do better this time around.

Eastern Michigan University finished the EMU Invite, Saturday, with much to be proud about on Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Fieldhouse. Ashlee Abraham led the way winning the women’s 60-meter dash with a near record time, 7.47, just two-hundredths of a second shy of the record held by Latrese Taylor of Akron, set in 2000. Abraham captured her victory in the 60-meter dash over a former NCAA champion from U of M, Tiffany Ofili.

Oakland outswims visiting Eastern

Swimming EMU men’s swimming and diving (1-2) couldn’t keep up with Oakland University on Saturday, losing a non-conference meet on the road, 184-116. Troy Esentan finished first in the 200 breaststroke, coming in at 2:04.84, not far behind was teammate Michael Swain, coming in at 2:07. Jacob Hanson ended the day with three second-place finishes, coming in the 200 back stroke and 200 IM, as well as the 100 backstroke. Next up on the Men’s swimming schedule is the University of Michigan, Saturday, Jan.

Basketball wins sixth straight

Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball extended its winning streak to six games and made its Mid-American Conference record 2-0 on Saturday by defeating the Ball State Cardinals 70-62 at the Convocation Center.

If you recall, it was then that I encouraged fans and media alike to pardon the poor 2-10 Detroit Lions and refrain from judging the team strictly on results when the team is playing (and playing hard) without it’s starting quarterback.

Roundup: Wrestling falls short in Dec.

Eastern Michigan University wrestling hasn’t won a meet since Dec. 3, but not for a lack of trying. The Eagles took on two ranked opponents in December, No. 9 Northwestern, and No. 24 Missouri, and their other dual meet loss came to the Big Ten’s Indiana.
